Call for Papers for September Conference

Submission Guidelines

Cambridge Symposium
September 27, 2008

The Global Forum in cooperation with health and technology experts from MIT will be hosting a web conference on utilizing cutting-edge technology to improve health care in resource poor settings. The web con will be hosted by our very own Leo Anthony Celi, M.D.

Symposium panelists:

Gari Clifford - Principal Research Scientist in the Laboratory for Computational Physiology at the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences where he is the engineering manager of a R01 NIH-funded research program, "Integrating Data, Models, and Reasoning in Critical Care", and a part-time contributor to the well-known Physionet Research Resource.

Andres Monroy-Hernandez - PhD candidate at the MIT Media Lab, his research focuses on web-based tools for creative learning and collaboration. Andres leads the development of the Scratch online community where thousands of children share their own interactive content.

Daniel Myung - is an engineer with a keen interest in developing expressive, interoperable and portable software systems specifically in the health care realm. Dan holds an ideal that there are social and societal ills that are waiting to be solved through the help of better, accessible software.

Luis Sarmenta - Research Scientist at the MIT Media Lab. Originally from the Philippines, he has personally experienced the revolutionary impact that mobile phones have had in the developing world, and thus deeply believes in the enormous life-changing potential of mobile phone applications.

Leo Anthony Celi - is an intensivist, internist and infectious disease specialist. He is currently pursuing a master's degree in biomedical informatics at MIT and a master's degree in public health at Harvard. His projects include the use of artificial intelligence in the ICU and mobile devices in virtual medical visits in resource-poor settings.

Alvin Marcelo (virtual panelist) - is a general and trauma surgeon by training who is currently the director of the University of the Philippines Manila National Telehealth Center. Right after residency training, he took his postdoctoral fellowship in medical informatics at the National Library of Medicine in Bethesda, Maryland with research interests in telepathology, mobile computing, and bibliometric analysis of MEDLINE content.

Dr. Josefino Comiso - NASA Senior Research Scientist
NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Maryland. His expertise is on climate change, polar oceanography, particle physics, satellite remote sensing. Dr. Comiso was contributing author to Chapter 4 of the Working Group I Report Observations: Change in Snow, Ice and Frozen Ground and an Expert Reviewer of Chapter 15 of WG II Report. These reports contributed to the report by the Intergovernmntal Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) which shared the 2007 Nobel Prize with former US Vice-President Al Gore.

Engineer Elaine Sison-Lebrilla is with the Sacramento Municipal Utility District. She is very well versed in renewable energy programs, Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS) and will talk to us about the various clean energy programs already in place by the very forward thinking county of Sacramento, California.
